Hermione Marks Visit to Yorktown on June 5-7, 2015
Hermione

After transporting Lafayette to America in 1780, the Hermione was among French ships in the vicinity of the Siege of Yorktown in 1781.

Yorktown, Virginia, site of the decisive battle of the American Revolution, was the first United States port of call – June 5-7 – for the Hermione, a replica of the ship that transported the Marquis de Lafayette from France to Boston in 1780 with news of increased French military support for the American War for Independence. The recently constructed 213-foot ship departed from France on April 18 and, after Yorktown, will stop at nine other ports on the eastern seaboard, from Alexandria, Virginia, to Castine, Maine.

Three days of public events, including a Heritage Village traveling exhibit, entertainment, educational programs, and tours of Jamestown Settlement’s 1607 ship replica Godspeed, took place in conjunction with the Hermione visit.

Special Programs

The occasion was marked with special programs at the The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. During June 5-7, visitors had the opportunity indoors to try on a replica of a French regimental coat, as well as uniforms of other nationalities present at the 1781 Siege of Yorktown, and outdoors to witness an array of artillery demonstrations and engage with historical interpreters in military drills and 18th-century-style farming.

“Slave Spy,” an original play combining live performance with film to tell the story of James Armistead Lafayette, an enslaved person who worked with General Lafayette as a spy for the American cause, was presented on Saturday, June 6. The The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown hosted a public lecture on June 7, “Lafayette and the Farewell Tour: Odyssey of an American Idol,” presented by Alan Hoffman, president of the American Friends of Lafayette.
