WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Jamestown Settlement will offer a festive array of 17th-century-style amusements – storytelling, magic, juggling, games and puppetry – during Children’s Day on Saturday, September 27, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A museum of 17th-century Virginia, Jamestown Settlement tells the story of America’s first permanent English settlement through film, expansive exhibition galleries and an engaging living-history program in outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, English ships and colonial fort, and a riverfront discovery area. Exhibition galleries chronicle the nation’s beginnings in Virginia and describe the cultures of the Powhatan Indians, Europeans and Africans who converged in 1600s Virginia.
Visitors of all ages will experience 1600s-style entertainment, including music, magic, juggling, stilt walking and puppet shows performed by Carson Hudson’s “Historical Diversions” troupe at 11 a.m., 12:45 and 2:30 p.m.
American Indian, African and English folktales will be presented by storytellers Paige Archer, Dylan Pritchett and Lara Templin at 10:15 a.m., 12 noon and 1:45, 3:15 and 4 p.m.
At 10:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., visitors can compare and contrast 17th-century games and pastimes of Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, including corncob darts, quoits and mancala. Children also can participate in craft activities, including making a pinwheel or leaf print, at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Special programs on artillery and military tactics in Jamestown will take place throughout the day. Artillery demonstrations, starting at 11:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., will illustrate the steps in firing a 17th-century swivel gun followed by an actual firing by historical interpreters. Visitors can take part in military drills at 12:30, 2:15 and 3:45 p.m.
A child’s life in 17th-century Virginia will be the focus of guided tours of the exhibition galleries and outdoor living-history areas. Gallery tours will begin at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Ninety-minute tours of the museum’s outdoor areas will begin at 11 a.m., 12 noon and 1 and 3 p.m.
