Let a Foundation educator guide your group on an interactive, hands-on tour.

General tours explore history through role-playing, examination of primary sources and object analysis. Or book an enhanced tour to develop a deeper understanding of 17th-century Jamestown, America’s first permanent English settlement.
Student tours and programs are correlated to the Virginia Standards of Learning, National Standards for History, National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies and Common Core. STEM objectives are incorporated into a number of programs. See detailed program descriptions for more information.
Different educational programs are offered at different rates (Rates A, B and C). General and themed guided tours are available under Rate A. A program with a guided tour is available at Rate B. If no educational component or guided tour is desired, self-guided tours (on your own) are available at Rate C.

GENERAL & THEMED TOURS – RATE A
Guided Tour – 2.5 hours: Highlights the Jamestown story and interactions of the Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures. Features visits to the re-created Powhatan Indian village, James Fort and 1607 ships, as well as the Jamestown Settlement galleries. All ages.
Government and Leadership Guided Tour – 2 hours: Highlights leadership in the Powhatan, English and African cultures, and the development of representative government in early colonial Virginia. Visits the re-created Powhatan Indian village, 1607 ships and James Fort, as well as the Jamestown Settlement galleries. Grades 4 to Adult. Virginia Social Studies Standards of Learning Objectives VS.1, VS.2, VS.3, USI.4, USI.5, CE.1, VSU.1, VUS.2.
Sampler Tour – 1 hour: Designed to help groups get the most out of a very limited time. Choose a Living-History Sampler Tour of the re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, 1607 ships and James Fort, or a Gallery Sampler Tour of the museum galleries and interactive exhibits. From Africa to Virginia Sampler focuses on the culture and 1619 arrival of the first recorded Africans in Virginia. Grades 7 to Adult.
People, Plants and Animals – 1.5 hours: Students use their senses to discover plants and animals that shared the environment of early colonial Virginia with the Powhatan Indians and English settlers on this fun, hands-on tour of the galleries and re-created Powhatan Indian village and James Fort. Students observe, identity and make simple classifications of Virginia plants and animals, past and present. Grades 1 to 2. Virginia Science Standards of Learning Objectives 1.1, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8.
Powhatan’s People – 1.5 hours: Students explore the re-created Powhatan Indian village and museum gallery on this introductory look at the Powhatan Indian culture. Pre-K to Grade 1.
PROGRAM WITH GUIDED TOUR – RATE B
Dig Deeper: Kindling a Spark – 2.5 hours: In the re-created Powhatan village and James Fort, students compare cultures as they discover the sometimes surprising ways the Powhatan Indians and English settlers used fire in early colonial Virginia. Each student will put the physics of fire-starting to the test using English flint and steel and a bow drill used by some American Indian groups to produce a spark, and compare and contrast the two methods. Dig Deeper: Setting Sail – 2.5 hours: At the ships’ pier, students work in teams to complete the tasks of a 17th-century ship’s crew and learn what it took to be an explorer like Christopher Newport! From tying knots, lifting cargo and signaling work shifts to finding their position in the Atlantic Ocean and plotting a course, they’ll all be part of the crew. Students put their math and science skills to work to determine their position and speed to safely reach Virginia’s shores! For grades 4 and up. Dig Deeper: Jamestown Crime “Seen” – 2.5 hours: At the re-created James Fort, students work in teams to examine primary source documents, artifacts and other evidence to solve a 400-year-old mystery: Was the gunpowder injury that sent John Smith back to England in 1609 an accident, a crime, or an attempt to sabotage the colony? Students analyze the evidence, see a re-creation of the “accident,” apply logic, and form and present their theories of the crime. They may solve this mystery once and for all! For grades 4 and up. Dig Deeper: Home on the James – 2.5 hours: At the riverfront discovery area, students will compare cultures by comparing Powhatan, English and African home building techniques. They’ll make cordage from plant fibers, lash framework and use the “wattle-and-daub” method of construction to build a wall. Teams will work cooperatively to problem-solve and complete each task of construction. For grades 4 and up. Powhatan Indian World – 2.5 hours: Corn grinding, sewing and cordage making are some of the activities students may try in the re-created Powhatan Indian village as they explore the culture of the Powhatan people. Students also visit the re-created James Fort and 1607 ships, as well as museum galleries. Grades 2 to 4. Cultures at Jamestown – 2.5 hours: Students compare and contrast the three cultures at Jamestown as they explore how the Powhatan Indians, English and west central Africans exchanged knowledge, technology and ideas and how their interactions shaped American history and life in the United States today. Students visit re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, 1607 ships and James Fort, as well as museum galleries. Grades 4 to 6. Life at Jamestown – 2.5 hours: Students are introduced to daily life, economic ventures and early struggles in the Jamestown colony through hands-on demonstrations such as open-hearth cooking and military life in the re-created James Fort. Students also visit the re-created Powhatan Indian village and 1607 ships, as well as museum galleries. Grades 4 to 6. Groups of 15 or more require advance reservations.
Guided tour reservations required at least three business days in advance and are subject to availability. We recommend making tour reservations at least two months in advance for fall and winter trips, and up to four months in advance for trips in the spring.
