‘Liberty Celebration’ Drums Up Patriotic Fun July 4 at American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

YORKTOWN, Va., June 21, 2018 — Salute the 242nd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence during “Liberty Celebration,” July 4 at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., visitors can enjoy music, interpretive programs, military drills and artillery demonstrations, as well as learn about the challenges that faced our nation’s founders, including those who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Liberty Celebration - Fifes and Drums of York Town To mark the patriotic occasion, the American Revolution Museum will offer a special lineup on July 4. The Fifes and Drums of York Town will perform on the museum’s event lawn at 11 a.m., and at noon, visitors can join in a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Learn about the key events, battles and leaders of the American Revolution during 30-minute presentations from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the museum’s Education Center classrooms.

At the Continental Army encampment, visitors can take part in the “Militia Muster” and join with other citizens to train as a member of the Virginia militia at 10:30 a.m. or join the ranks and begin training as a member of General Washington’s Army at 1:30 p.m. Join an 18th-century artillery crew at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and watch as historical interpreters fire a salute to our nation’s independence.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Revolution-era farm, visitors can learn how farmers became more self-sufficient during war time by raising and processing flax, cotton and wool for homespun cloth in “From Field to Fabric.” Also featured on the farm throughout the day until 3 p.m., see historical interpreters prepare a variety of 18th-century dishes on the hearth, using historical recipes from Virginia’s earliest cookbooks.

Indoors, there’s no shortage of liberty experiences. Visitors can view a rare broadside of the Declaration of Independence dating to July 1776, enjoy showings of “Liberty Fever,” the award-winning introductory film in the museum theater, and take in a special exhibition, “Blast from the Past: Artillery in the War of Independence,” featuring artillery used on all fronts of the American Revolution by the American, French and British forces.

The event is funded in part by the York County Arts Commission and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., Annual Fund.
