Internship Opportunities

The Commonwealth of Virginia Internship Programs offers students the opportunity to combine academic studies with on-the-job training and experience while completing their education. Students interested in internship opportunities should contact state agencies directly for more information. The Department of Human Resource Management Career Center is also available for job search assistance and for assistance in planning a career in state government. Learn more about Internship Opportunities with the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation intern program is managed through the Office of Volunteer Services.  We currently offer academic and experiental internships to qualified undergraduate and graduate students interested in gaining practical museum experience and who have a strong interest in history, education, or a museum career.  No stipends are provided.Working under the guidance of Museum staff, interns participate in the daily operations of the department to which they are assigned.  Students become familiar with the challenges and rewards of working with exhibits, research, visitors, planning and assisting in the implementation of new programs or special projects.  Internships are usually available in, but are not necessarily limited to,  the following areas:  Curatorial, Development, Marketing & Retail Operations, Museum Education Services, On-Site Education, Customer Research, Finance, Human Resources, Library Services, and Information Technology.

To be considered for an internship, candidates must complete and submit a Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation volunteer application and complete the placement process including a screening interview, a secondary interview with the department in which they wish to be placed, establish a regular schedule, and attend required training (e.g., new hire orientation; safety and security orientation).

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation will make efforts to comply with individual school requirements for those participants seeking academic credit for their internships.  Generally speaking, an intern should be available to work a minimum of 8 hours and no more than 20 hours per week.

Most internships are offered from September through December; February through early May; late May through August, although starting and ending dates can be more flexible.

Deadlines for applying are as follows:
Fall Semester/ September 15
Spring Semester/ January 15
Summer/ April 15
