Highlights

  • In August 1781, General Cornwallis encamped at Yorktown, Virginia, and set about fortifying his position.
  • In early October, the American and French troops lay siege to Cornwallis’ troops.
  • Surrounded and cut off from supplies, General Cornwallis attempted to move his troops across the York River to Gloucester, but a bad storm prevented it.
  • General Cornwallis was forced to surrender on October 19, 1781.
