Jamestown Settlement galleries present one of the most varied collections relating to 1600s Virginia and the convergence of Powhatan Indian, European and African cultures – decorative and utilitarian objects, portraits, engravings and furnishings. Among items on exhibit are original portraits of King James VI of Scotland (later James I of England) and Virginia Company of London investors, a circa 1600 bronze plaque from the royal court of Benin, West Africa, and various depictions of Pocahontas including a painting by John Gadsby Chapman of her baptism. Outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, 1607 ships and fort feature periodic demonstrations of pottery- and basket-making, stone and bone tool-making, and leather, wood and metal crafts.

Gallery exhibits at the Yorktown Victory Center, a museum of the American Revolution, feature a diverse collection of decorative and military objects, portraits, engravings, and documents, including a Declaration of Independence broadside printed in July 1776, an embroidered silver epaulette star made for George Washington in 1799, and portraits of key individuals associated with the American Revolution – Washington, British commander Lord Cornwallis and French King Louis XVI. Exhibits also feature several objects made and used in Virginia, including a cast iron stove plate by Isaac Zane inscribed in German and an 18th-century yellow pine clothes press exemplifying a unique furniture-making industry that flourished on Virginia’s Eastern Shore in the 1700s. Outdoors, a re-creation of a 1780s farm features periodic demonstrations of flax breaking, cloth dying, spinning and needlework.

Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center museum stores offer a selection of books, prints, museum reproductions and items relating to the 17th and 18th centuries.
