JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT’S 2007 HERITAGE LECTURE SERIES
CONTINUES WITH DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN ON AUGUST 4

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Renowned historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin will speak at Jamestown Settlement on Saturday, August 4, at 7 p.m. as part of the 2007 Heritage Lecture Series.

Doris.JPGJamestown Settlement is a museum of 17th-century Virginia operated by the state’s Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.  During museum hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on August 4, a special event, “The 1619 Assembly: A Jamestown Legacy,” will commemorate the 388th anniversary of the first legislative assembly in British America.

In “The Lessons of History,” Goodwin will share her experiences in writing four presidential biographies, as well as the process involved in writing her memoir, “Wait Till Next Year,” about a love of baseball she shared with her father.
Goodwin has written for leading national publications and is the author of several best-selling books, most recently “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.”  Her “No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt” was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1995.  Goodwin is a commentator for NBC and for Public Television’s NewsHour and has consulted for PBS documentaries “The American President,” “The Kennedys” and “Baseball.”

Goodwin is a magna cum laude graduate of Colby College and received a Ph.D. from Harvard University, where she taught government, including a course on the American presidency.  She was an assistant to Lyndon Johnson in his last year in the White House and later assisted in the preparation of his memoirs.

Future speakers in the 2007 Heritage Lecture Series are Jack Rakove, Stanford University professor of History and American Studies and 1997 History Pulitzer Prize winner, on September 8; Michael Beschloss, best-selling author and NBC Presidential Historian, on October 6; and W. Richard West, Jr., member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma and Peace Chief of the Southern Cheyenne, and founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, on November 3.

The lectures all take place at Jamestown Settlement’s Robins Foundation Theater, at 7 p.m.  Admission is free.  Seating is limited.  Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at (757) 253-4415 or
