History is Fun
For Homeschool Students
September 8-23, 2012

At Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center, your homeschool students will love discovering the sights and sounds of the 17th and 18th centuries while learning about their nation’s history. And you will love the variety of curriculum-based education programs offered for a range of grade levels – all taught by trained museum educators.

Ticket Information:

• Homeschool program tickets are $10.50 per family member (youth or adult) before September 1. On or after September 1, tickets are $11.00.
• The homeschool ticket is good for admission to both Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center throughout the entire date range.
• Ticket holders can visit both museums as many times as they like during the date range!
• Homeschool admission tickets are available for on-line purchase at historyisfun.org.
• If you do not have on-line access, tickets can also be purchased by calling group reservations at (757) 253-4939 or in person at the visitor services desk at either museum.

Homeschool Programs and Tours:

• Each ticketholder is entitled to one hands-on classroom program and one family tour at each museum.
• Students can enroll in one of four classroom programs at each museum, according to grade level, and families can register for an interactive, 2-hour guided tour at each museum.
• The optional hands-on classroom programs and family tours must be scheduled separately following ticket purchase by calling group reservations at (757) 253-4939.
• Call early – classroom programs and tours book quickly!
• The pre-registration deadline for hands-on programs and guided tours is 5 p.m. three business days prior to the program/tour. Walk-ins will be accepted if space is available.
• All programs address Virginia and United States standards of learning for history and social studies.

Homeschool Weekend Activities – Colonial Games
Jamestown Settlement September 15 and 22
Yorktown Victory Center September 16 and 23
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Homeschoolers, join us at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center for colonial fun! Games such as quoits, bowling and hoop rolling – even board games like Nine Men’s Morris were enjoyed by colonial children and you’ll enjoy them too! Come by anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to experience the fun. Activities will be led by museum staff and volunteers, and will be outdoors except in inclement weather.

Family Guided Tour
Visit re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village and James Fort, replica 1607 ships, and a riverfront discovery area on this 2-hour hands-on tour guided by a trained museum educator.

Tour times: 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Preschool – Kindergarten – Little Powhatans
Through simple and fun hands-on activities, students identify ways the Powhatan Indians met their basic needs for food, shelter and clothing using natural resources. They will also hear a Powhatan Indian story, and compare Powhatan Indian life to life today.

Program dates: September 11, 12, 14, 18, 19, 21
Program times: 10:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

Grades 1-2 - Living With the Indians
Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools and pottery of the Powhatan Indian culture.

Program dates: September 11, 12, 14, 18, 19, 21
Program times: 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.

Grades 3-6 - Cultures at Jamestown
Students compare and contrast the Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures that came into contact during the 17th century.

Grades 7-12 - Voyage to Virginia
Students learn about the 1607 voyage to Virginia by exploring period navigational tools.

Family Guided Tour
Visit the re-created Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm on this 2-hour hands-on tour guided by a trained museum educator.

Preschool – Kindergarten – Little Farmers
Children will learn about life as a child on a farm in the eighteenth century. Through hands-on activities, they will learn about clothing, chores, stories and games. Throughout the program participants will compare the life of an 18th-century child to their lives today.

Grades 1- 2 - Colonial Life
Students examine tools and materials used on a small Virginia farm to explore life of a typical Tidewater farming family.

Program times: 9:30, 10:45 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.

Grades 3-6 - Revolutionary Virginia
Students analyze primary sources and reproduction artifacts to learn about lives
of ordinary 18th-century Virginians.

Grades 7-12 - Life of a Private
Students explore a Continental soldier’s haversack, clothing and weapons to relate to the experiences of people during the American Revolution.

Program dates: September 10, 12, 13, 17, 19, 20
Program times: 10:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

Plan time to see the introductory film, visit the museum galleries, have lunch and visit the gift shops at Jamestown Settlement before or after your program and tour. At the Yorktown Victory Center, visit the museum galleries, view the film and visit the gift shop.
